Be Inclusive When You Lead a Meeting

The meetings that you lead and that you are a part of are great opportunities to create a space where contributions from everyone on your team is welcome and encouraged.  Ensuring that teammates of all backgrounds, communities, identities, offices and job levels have access to information and an opportunity to contribute makes us better and more productive.

Here are some questions to ask yourself before and during your next meeting:

  1. Am I inviting a diverse group of stakeholders who can bring a variety of experiences, skills and perspectives?

  2. How can I ensure that every voice can be heard during the meeting?

  3. Am I rotating meeting times to accommodate a wide variety of time zones?

  4. How can I recognize the contributions of people who work “behind the scenes”?

  5. Am I pronouncing people’s names correctly?

  6. Am I acting on the feedback and ideas from a diverse group of participants?

  7. What can I do to share the information with teammates who could not attend?
