Help People Feel Like They Belong

Even with the best of intentions we can make people feel left out at work. To combat this, each one of us needs to consciously try to be inclusive. 

Here are some ideas to help you get started:

  • Ask yourself “how can I make [insert teammate’s name] feel like they belong?”

  • Invite someone to weigh-in on a first draft of your work

  • Set up a process for all people to talk at team meetings

  • Be transparent about decisions, don’t make them offline with a select few

  • Help people find avenues to contribute

  • Acknowledge everyone’s hard work

  • Encourage people to share their personal experiences

 When people feel like they don’t belong at work, their performance and their personal lives suffer.  We have a responsibility to make sure our teammates feel heard and have a safe space to express themselves authentically.
